The south London sub-region has one of the highest levels of economic activity in London with an average employment rate of 76% for the sub-region compared with the Greater London average of 69%. South London also has the overall highest quality of life of the London sub-regions. However, this masks geographical differences and contrast between some of the most affluent areas and some of the most deprived areas.
In order to achieve sustainable and inclusive economic development for south London, each aspect of our priorities and actions require us to take into account the needs of all individuals and businesses and equality of access to support. There will be occasions when actions need to be tailored and targeted to ensure that all communities can take advantage of opportunities and share in the benefits of economic growth. Barriers to growth facing Londoners include high living costs, less opportunity to those with low level skills, skills mismatch, real problems of deprivation, new migrants and refugees, discrimination, poor individual expectations and guidance, poor physical infrastructure etc.
