Transport and Infrastructure
Improved transport infrastructure is vital to address issues of access to, through and around the sub-region and to meet all development needs. Despite having good radial mainline train routes and London’s only tram, the area has only 10% of the London Underground network and orbital rail linkages are virtually non-existent.
The Terminal 5 development at Heathrow will put additional pressure on the surrounding transport infrastructure, but also provides opportunity for the sub-region.
From a business perspective, road transport as a mode continues to be particularly important both for staff and for the movement of materials, goods and services. The road network is congested and limiting capacity for cars, bus routes and freight movement.
Future transport needs for south London include ensuring that transport investment, wherever possible, complements actions to support and generate a vibrant south London economy. Improved orbital transport and collaborative planning for transport improvements must take into account: population growth, business needs including access and freight, access to town and district centres, issues of isolated communities - to help address exclusion and open up job opportunities; access to health, leisure and sport; education; and skills and tourism.
